You get the 10% bonus after you redeem. So you redeem 10,000 points, and they give you 1,000 back after you check out. This annoys a lot of people but incents you to keep the card.
I plan on buying an airline ticket for about $450 and redeeming my ~42k points towards the ticket.
When the 10% ( ~ 4200) miles post back I'll just redeem that for cash ($21) and then cancel around the 10 month mark
