And I'm guessing you're not getting $.10 of value out of your points when redeeming for CX F... unless you'd be willing to pay over $10k for that roundtrip, in which case you can probably generate the requisite starpoints quite quickly.
A sensible response. True, doesn't have to either/or. In this instance, on CX, I have unlimited food and drink for close to 24 hours, my own bed, access to a shower (in HKG), some killer views, and I cross half the planet. To me, I place much more value on that experience than the $750 or so I'm guessing a paid night at the SR would go for. But you make a good point, for those that are either massively long or massively short SPG currency, hotel redemptions may provide some value. But I've never been able to make the math work.
