I found Nicosia interesting enough for a day trip - including walking across to the north.
If you rent a car, definitely make a run to the Turkish side of the island to see the Venetian harbor/castle in Lefkosia (Turks call the town Girne), as well as the ancient Roman ruins of Salamis, located in the outskirts of Famagusta. I'm unaware of anything really interesting to see in Nicosia or Larnaca.
