Yea, with so many carriers dumping their old 744s in that past couple of years, I can believe even parting them out wouldn't make sense in most cases. That 5% residual starts to add up when you dump a bunch of airframes all at once...on the other hand, that is cash long since out the door, and what is a few tens of millions in depreciation expense among friends these days?
