I agree with you- I don't ask either however some people do this and it seems to pay off for them some of the time. Particularly in the U.S.A. where they will sell you an upgrade for $50-$300 willingly prior to OP-UPs for elites - given the desire of management also at LH to create ancillary revenue I would not be surprised to see eventually a similar program to the Air Canada "Last Minute Upgrade" as they are testing in a different way at Austrian eventually roll out to Lufthansa as well.
