Make sure you buy a "muni passport" this lets you use the buses, cable cars, trams and metro (but not the Bart) unlimited for the number of days about 30 usd for 7 days... A one way trip on the cable cars is about 6 usd

Did this myself when I was I San Francisco. I highly recommended it, if you have the legs cycle up the Marin Headlands before heading to Sausalito.

Picked my bike up from http://www.blazingsaddles.com the bike shop also supplies tickets for the ferry from Sausalito back to San Francisco.
