I've yet to have a single SNA clear so there's not a lot to say about that. I'm at 14 nights so far for the year, that includes credit card nights. I'm sure I'll have more stays later down the road, but I'd rather have the stress of requalify cation behind me. I started a graduate program so in the past where I had extensive personal travel on top of business travel this year I might not have much of either. I do have several trips planned but they are all to places where there are no SPG/Hyatt properties: Mongolia and Idaho.
No offense man...but either you have way too much money to burn or you're out of your mind. $2,000 is a lot of money - if you were travelling around and were spending a little more to stay at SPG to hit status, that makes sense. But to just waste money on hotel rooms to get status? I don't get that.
I stay at SPG properties over 100 nights a year, the biggest benefit by far is the points I earn and the free nights that come with it. Platinum status is a nice to have for the extra points, access to lounges, free wifi, and the potential for upgrades...but I could live without it as I don't tend to spend a lot of time in my hotel room when travelling.
BTW I did travel to Tokyo once without status and paid for a room on the executive floor, which was about $40 more a night than the normal room (was splitting a room and with the free breakfast / drinks made sense). Like others have said - you're better off just spending money on upgraded rooms than doing this.
