Maybe for 6-8hrs just like most try to do every other night. What a concept! Fact is, most do want to sleep. Not all, but most. That's why the FAs cater to darkened cabin crowd and lower the shades - majority rules.

And, I think Badenoch makes a valid point that they are traveling for work and they hope to be rested. They do not have the opportunity to sleep in their hotel for 2 days upon arrival to catch up on zzzzz's. Some leisure tourists might. Call that entitled if you want but I just call it being courteous to allow them & the majority to sleep. And, you do not have to sleep, do what you want. Just don't let your supposed God-given right to an open shade ruin it for the majority who simply want to rest.

And, the argument that the FAs are being lazy by trying to make everyone sleep so they can sit and do nothing is utter baloney and plain rude. They work hard and are there to help you and bring you a meal and drinks. But, they aren't your mom and do not have to be at your beck and call the entire flight. If you are so worried about not getting food or a drink the instant you want one, then sit in J and walk back to the open bar area full of snacks or bring your own food/drink on board.
They are both advancing the entitlement argument.

The worker who needs rest is saying 'my .... is more important that yours so close the blind'

The window seat person is saying 'no it isn't. If sleep was so important to you I guess you should have done a little more than nothing to increase your chances of success. Don't count on me to care'

Prior to invoking demands that a favor be done, people should assess where the subject matter lies along the scope of importance. No one is giving up a kidney here.

If you want a better chance of solitude, I suggest you book first class. Booking economy and then complaining that people actually wanted to look out the windows they took steps to sit beside sounds a bit foolish.
