Here are a couple of other pics during takeoff on a super cloudy Seattle day for your reference.
I wanted to stay awake the entire time to Japan due to this being a short weekend trip and I wanted to stay on a specific timezone so I kept my window pretty much open the entire trip - I did dim it a bit during times when I did not look out and chose to watch a movie. During flight time over Alaska and other interesting points I brightened the window fully. On the flight home I wanted to sleep the entire way so I pretty much left it fully dimmed and it was quite dark. After my nice long sleep, I woke up and could just barely see outside the fully dimmed window but I could make out what appeared to be the moon and the shape of the wing. So I started to brighten up the window and suddenly realized it was actually the bright sun! So yes - they do dim a great deal. I figure if anyone was sitting beside me and wanted to sleep they are more than welcome to use the sleeping shades provided. I always carry an extra pair of clean and fully wrapped sleeping shades to offer a person sitting next to me if they complain about me opening the windows shades.
As much as I love the huge windows on the 787 and the cool dimming feature, I actually prefer a manual shade to pull up or down because when I am on a long haul and I want to look outside I can raise the blind just a wee bit - with the 787 you have to brighten the entire window.
Yes - I am one of those people who will open a window shade when I feel like it but I do it respectfully.
And now to the pics - first is departing on a cloudy day from Seattle. Second is arriving into Japan.

Nice pics! What time of day was that at?
