Gold service through third-party websites

On another thread, the topic of reserving a Hertz rental through Southwest.com came up. And one of the responses included this:

I’m making a short weekend trip to LAX on Friday and had initially booked a car directly through Hertz.com as always. After reserving a hotel through Marriott.com (again, as always), they were offering me exactly the same car I had booked five minutes earlier, but at a lower rate than even my AAA weekend rate. So I went ahead and completed the car reservation with Marriott (and entered my Hertz member number in the appropriate box).

But skeptical that if I didn’t book through Hertz.com directly, I would get the Gold service, I called the Gold customer service line. She representative assured me: “...I see your member number on your reservation; you will get Gold service as usual. It doesn’t matter where you make the reservation as long as your member number is entered correctly.” And sure enough, if I log onto my account at Hertz.com and go to View Reservations, I see the car I booked through Marriott.com—everything looks exactly as usual. With this assurance, I cancelled the first reservation (placed through Hertz.com).

So was the rep incorrect? I certainly don’t want to end up in a long line at LAX, so if she was, I want to make a new reservation now.
