AP can work great, and depending where you live short haul flights can have some great value! There are places I would not pay $900 revue or 50k AP to visit but for 15K AP and $129 not a problem.
Lifestyle, Employment type and Status are key- on Redemption Status makes all of the difference! Not just one card will work, have to know how to use the system to its full potential to maximize the value. (still learning)
Remember all of the banks are flocking travel cards for one reason and only one reason ---- THEY MAKE A LOT OF MONEY as the margins on these cards are high, delinquency is low, redemption rates are low, and the spillage or non redeemed points are high! You have think on what benefits you and not the Financial institution!
Yes, very true, find what works for you! I am based in between YYD and YXS so traveling to YVR can be expensive during high season - hence AP works great because of the lower redemption cost even for expensive routes for AC.
That's why AP works better for me. In general I do not like the cashback/travel redemption cards because they offer less redemption value.
