additional complications make it more likely that BA can find a get out along the way (eg any AA compensation constituted settlement of the issue etc.)

Given your AA status I'm sure AA will be sensible down the line - and if you do get in touch with them now would suggest making clear that you have specifically requested EU261 downgrade compensation from BA (maybe they could be helpful chivvying the relevant department into being more responsive)
