OP, are you saying that the FA's closed the shades even if someone in the window seat was reading and wanted it open? Second question, the overhead won't work if the IFE is inoperable, how about the small adjustable light in the headrest?
There was one especially pushy FA who kept going around the cabin essentially demanding that all shades be kept closed. I finally told her no very firmly and that I needed some light in order to read. While most of the crew handled the broken equipment issues as best as they could with good humor this one attendant seemed to be uncaring about the issues. It was one bad apple out of the rest of the bunch which worked hard to keep disappointed passengers happy.
