I am of the opinion that FAs like the shades closed because it keeps the passengers docile. I hate traveling in a tube in the dark for 16 or more hours. It's unnatural.
Although on that flight at this time of year you take off around sunset, it's dark for the first ~half of the flight, then there's some light for a few hours over Canada, and then dark again for landing. If you're trying to sleep the light comes at just the wrong time.
