I just wanted to add a data point to this thread: I just booked 2xF LAX-DXB-BOM for April and hit three separate instances of "phantom" availability (as mentioned earlier upthread) along the way. It would go all the way through purchase and then bounce back with "space not available". I subscribed to EF and indeed these days were Z0 or Z1, but showed as available for 2 on the AS website. 24 hours after my failed attempts at booking, these still all show as available from AS, so if it is a synchronization issue it has a long cycle...
If you are planning on transferring to AS/buying miles/etc for an award, be sure to double-check what the website is showing via EF beforehand!
Most of mine give a error on EF that Z space cannot be returned for this flight (or something like that) in big red letters
