Actually, I think it is the other way around.
Our Topas and Silver Integral cases function as expected. Dents and scratches yes, but nothing major since 1994.
Some of the early polycarbonate cases had a very thin mil wall. Reading here on FT, there are more than a few that have or are replacing cracked cases.
The problem for the companies is trying to achieve a light weight case.
I was shown a new Samsonite recently, comparing it to a few Rimowas, which were being phased out, and light yes, but the Samsonite flexed badly. The store was moving in favour of the Samsonite as " we can move more product. " The owner, the store rep stated, had also made a business decision to emphasize " Outlet store " sales, rather than " retail store " sales. I asked what the difference was and was told that the outlet products could be sold as discounted items.
How do you service or repair the cases, I asked ? " We don't: We refer those out to a repair shop somewhere. " Then adding, " Once out the door, it is really the responsibility of the buyer. "
