Have you tried to price the stopover on China Airlines (Taiwan)? with Beijing - Taipei (their hub - being the "free" stopover city) for your travel dates ?

Their website was acting funny so I couldn't pull up details - speak to a local TA in LAX area and/or call up their 800# for a quote ....
