Buying seat to gateway city for int'l award travel-how much time between flights?

I am traveling in May and June from DFW to AMS on DL/AF award seats. I need to purchase seats from our hometown airport of MSY to DFW on a different airline (AA). Our international flight departs at 3:45p on a Saturday. Any suggestions on how early we should arrive in DFW? I don't want to take any chances that we will miss the DFW-AMS flight and we are willing to arrive early.

A second similar question: we spend a couple of days in AMS and then will purchase seats AMS-LHR on BA to catch a 8pm LHR-NBO flight on a Tues. There are flights all day-any experience with that route and/or suggestion on timing there as well?
