Taking this a step further, look at flightaware for scheduled arrivals of the aircraft type you're departing on, in the window 1 to 2 hours before your flight leaves. Jot down the numbers, and run those flight numbers through US flight status page to find the one that arrives at your departure gate. You can do this from home. Somewhat of a PITA if there are 15 A319s arriving in that bank, but doable.
I hope they stick with AA's system - this exercise will be a thing of the past!
