Price discrimination. They are typically purchased by business travelers or by people who are relocating long term. These people will pay it because they have to pay it. Round trips, especially with advance purchase and minimum/maximum stay requirements, are targeted at leisure travelers who are much more price sensitive.

You'll still see this to a certain extent domestically, although LCCs have made this practice a shadow of what it once was, especially on competitive routes.
