i'm probably going to be in a similar situation in a few months time....will be checking into a spg property for about 2 weeks & in between i might have to make a couple of single night trips to another city....my client has no problem spending extra for the night i need to book another room so i would really prefer to not check out of the first hotel....but if i'll only get credit for the shorter stay then i guess i have no choice but to check out & check in again a day later....
I have had this case in the past and a phone call to SPG got both credited given that the hotels were not near each other (i.e., you clearly had to travel). That said, it is a bit of a crapshoot so my approach these days is just to make the single night at another chain. Certainly if your alternative is to check out of the first hotel so that net you are getting the same number of nights, then I'd just use the single night to try out another chain (which is why I think Starwood is actually being silly with this because it encourages loyal customers to explore alternative hotel chains).
