If you are flying on partner airline there has to be availability in Z. Usually cancellation is free for major schedule change/flight cancelled. Call back and try again.
Booked PVG-HKG-ORD on KA/CX F. Delayed departure of PVG-HKG meant missing HKG-ORD. CX was ready at HKG with new BPs for HKG-SFO/LAX (forget which) on CX F then SFO/LAX-ORD on UA.
So I think it depends if it's at airport or not??
