I once had a AA biz flight to from US to LHR cancelled for mechanical, and they put me on an F seat on UA. (Seems that AA sends a request to UA with the ticket cost and the request for reaccomodation- in this case UA decided the $ were worth it. Only $1700 one way, but UA was going to give it up as an upgrade anyway.) I bring this up to point out that they can do an awful lot with irrops, but sometimes are just too lazy.
