If you are flying on AA, most of time they are pretty good about opening up a seat for you. I've even had agent tell me they could put me on a non-stop LAX-JFK if schedule changed.

If you are flying on partner airline there has to be availability in Z. Usually cancellation is free for major schedule change/flight cancelled. Call back and try again.
