But in this case, wouldn't the airline consider that one is carrying actually TWO carry-on pieces? I checked out the Briggs & Riley U116 and it looks like a carry-on to me. So wouldn't the combination of the B&R plus say a Tom Bihn tristar on top be automatic gate check candidates?

A poster here named TheGasGuru turned me on to a clever alternative. He suggested buying a small wheeled tote or briefcase (he and I both use the Briggs & Riley U116) which you can use as a "cart" to put your RedOxx/Tom Bihn on top of for those times when you carry a heavy load.
The advantage of this setup is that you still don't need to gate check, plus you have wheels for those long or heavy trips.
