You could have asked someone at the Airtrain station. The trains are clearly marked and the train you got on said "Federal Circle" and either Jamaica or Howard Beach -- not airline terminals!
Even once you got on the wrong train, and got back to T1, you could have gotten on the other loop train to go to T7 without going through 2, 4, 5, etc.
