IHG's IT can certainly be annoying, but since it also opens so many opportunities for gaming the system, I'm happy with the poor IT and spending a bit more time making a separate points + cash and cancelling...
I had this issue the other day. Simply book for an award that you DO have enough points, and select P + C. Then cancel it.
