Thoughts On a "Mileage Run"

For two out of the last four years, I have taken a mileage run trip from home to SYD with an immediate turn. In addition, one year I did a run to PER with an immediate return. Grueling...yes, but still fun. Oh yes...in Y.

I was thinking about doing another SYD run this year, but then I saw the post about DL's longest nonstops and wondered "Why not JNB or DXB this year?"

These aren't mileage runs in the conventional sense of trying to get the biggest bang for the buck, but more on the order of getting a bunch of miles in a short period of time, even if it costs a little bit. ATL-JNB and ATL-DXB are both a bit longer than LAX-SYD and also more expensive, with DXB quite a bit more expensive.

Immigration and Customs in Australia have been a quick and pleasant experience each time. I am wondering if I would have any concerns with JNB or DXB? Also, delta.com won't let me book a quick turn JNB or DXB trip on line even though the schedule shows about 3 hours between arrival and departure. I don't know if I could get a telephone agent to do it for me or not. I would not really mind spending the night if I had to though.

Anyone have any thoughts other than "you're nuts!" ?
