You won't be able to keep the seat next to you as that would require that both boarding passes be scanned at the gate. I don't know whether DL would let you change the first name to "ExtraSeat" to make this possible. It might require that both tickets be on the same PNR.
I'm fine with canceling one ticket and losing the $ in order to avoid any issues. But I figure if the seat is already paid for, surely there's a way for me to use it.

Sounds like I should just call DL after the weather settles down and see what my options are.
