No different from flying from the UK to North America via AMS or CDG - which hundreds of people do every day. And sometimes you get much better deals by taking these kinds of detours.

For the OP - I'm assuming it's a single booking (as you didn't say otherwise), and 50 minutes is indeed a legal connections... but it's not one I would want to risk connecting to a once-a-day long-haul flight.
