Get cashback credit cards, if you get 2-5% on most purchases with the signup bonuses, you should be good for rare travel. Miles/points cards should be used ASAP as noted above, especially if you have no travel plans for the next couple years. People here have millions of points because they can earn hundreds of thousands very quickly, and most spend them within a year or two.
If you're really set on having some points that can be used for airlines/hotels, go with the Sapphire/Freedom combo. You can get cashback if necessary, and transfer to many programs depending on who has devalued the most by the time you need to spend them.
