This, along with

- having to wait for a bag at the carousel
- running the risk of having a lost bag
- losing the flexibility to move to a different flight in case of IRROPS after check-in
- having to deal with even longer wait times to get your bag back if there are any IRROPS

is the reason why I never, ever check a bag.
