You might want to look at the Strand Palace hotel. I stayed there for about a week recently. Definitely no frills, but clean, cheap (within their budget), and in a better location than Kings Cross.
Thanks for this as well- glad to hear it is clean- another good suggestion. I stayed at this hotel many many years ago (1988)- and at the time it looked like it needed a serious renovation- it is clean and within budget can be an option.
