I know you said no chains if at all possible but the Premier Inn chain is perfectly reasonable for their requirements.
They have locations all over the UK and London and the date I've put in comes in at a reasonably £99 a night.
I use the Premier Inn at LGW frquently without any problem - I've even stayed in a Premier Inn in Dubai which was decent.
