I am in the same position. I was advised to reapply via AMEX. I did so, and a couple of weeks later received an email with a new account. I phone the UK helpline and they merged the two accounts (by putting the new account status on my existing account). So I now have my original gold aco.... extended to Feb 2015.

A bit of a faff but they were pretty efficient. Hope this helps.
