That's a very big ouch! At least in my case, the flight flew-tho it appears it flew empty with only crew

Umm....this isn't consequential. The pax broke the bin. What UA doesn't get is the "loss of plane" damages - like what rental car agencies try to do.
Or the cost of re-booking some of the pax on other carriers CLT-EWR so they wouldn't miss their int'l conx
