So what happens in this case? I paid for his tickets, but I just lose the value of the tickets or do I get credit of the original ticket value? I know it's V fare tickets and non-refundable.
If your companion cancels and does not rebook for another flight in the future, then you lose the value of the ticket. If you rebook (on any route), then you can apply the residual value from the ticket after deducting the change fee.

If you are booked on the same reservation, do not let your companion not show up without canceling. This might cause problems for you on the return trip. Ideally split the reservation, cancel your companion's portion, and save the ticket number just in case your companion ever flies AA in the future.
