I had a friend come up and visit us once and the front desk called up asking for his passport copy. I've found that hotels in France have similar regulations. I am at hotels in Europe several nights a month at a minimum, and it's not common for me to be asked for passport copies for all occupants (or even just for myself) with the exception of some countries. In various European countries, I most commonly get checked into hotels without showing any photo ID.
