I can't see any other carriers filling a significant amount of the capacity UA is dropping... they're all so much smaller than UA at CLE.

Based on Monday's pre-reduction schedule, ASMs in 1000s:

Code:
 carrier | dests | flights | seats | asm | mainline | express
---------+-------+---------+-------+------+----------+---------
 UA | 58 | 168 | 9908 | 6139 | 3097 | 3041
 AA | 5 | 15 | 1011 | 687 | 392 | 295
 DL | 5 | 19 | 1422 | 659 | 366 | 292
 WN | 3 | 11 | 1593 | 551 | 551 |
 US | 2 | 12 | 975 | 394 | 160 | 234
 F9 | 2 | 2 | 336 | 292 | 292 |
 AC | 1 | 3 | 111 | 21 | | 21
Even the new American will be a third the size of the downsized UA.

To very large numbers of people, these events are the equivalent of the neighbor letting his dog drop a load on their front lawn. That's part of where the outrage and the "we'll show them" perspective comes from. Go to www.cleveland.com and scan the comments following the recent news coverage of the dehubbing and you'll see what I mean. Pay particular attention to how often you see the word "victim" and the phrase "slap in the face."

The reason outsiders scratch their heads about all of the uproar is that people elsewhere don't get so worked up about things like whether the local airport is called a hub or not and whether the local sports celebrity du jour takes his talents elsewhere. They have better things to think about. But when you're reduced to hanging your hat on such tenuous and fleeting hallmarks, this is the result.
Seems like they're confusing cause and effect.
