They've probably sent you a new card (with a new expiration date), if you'd had if for over 2.5 years, but they probably added the "active" on the site before you received the card.
(The "activate" showing up on the website before the updated card came in the mail happened to me on a different Barclays card once or twice.)
You were right -- the new card finally came today, 3 weeks later. Barclays is always late with me -- my first anniversary bonus came over 2 months after I paid the fee and last year I had to call them about it when it hadn't shown up after 3 months. It's pretty annoying.
