Your position is a reasonable one.
But I can certainly understand why airlines don't take this risk, and say they don't in the CoC. Taking that liability could be very costly. Take a once daily flight to a resort destination that got cancelled. Should DL pay the expense of potentially hundreds of rooms? Even $500/night rooms? What about pre-paid events the customer planned? What if the passenger missed going to the Super Bowl, etc?
Again, it is not unreasonable to think/hope DL would pay this expense, but it is clear to see why they don't. This is just one of the risks in booking hotel rooms this way. Or (and I hate to be the guy who posts this) a good reason to buy travel insurance.
