I have rented private villas (at $10k/week+) for family trips with the kids 2x/year for the last 10 years in a variety of destinations and have never been disappointed. In fact, we are trying Punta del Este (Jose Ignacio) next week for the first time and were tempted by Playa Vik until we found a gorgeous 5-br beachfront home with a heated pool for less than the cost of a 3br suite at Playa Vik. I will report back if you are interested.
Mustique is great and there are a few villas in the $10k range but mostly in low season (starting mid-April). Check out Baliceaux, which is $12k in high season. Chef and staff are part of the deal although you of course need to tip them.
Also St Barths will have villas in that range and most rental agencies will offer you (expensive) chef services (not included) and sitters, but the restaurants are great so you won't want to eat in most nights. I will say that the $10k is easier to achieve at a great villa in shoulder or off season.
I am perhaps biased toward villas b/c we now own a few in Florida that we rent out.
Beaches is $10k for a week!? Every day I am less and less of a believer in efficient markets...
Does it have a lot to do with the service?
I've never stayed at a private villa, only in hotels...but it's hard to imagine service being any better than some of these top hotels. It's easy to imagine it being worse or even sub-standard from what you expect.
