I do like the suggestion up thread to adjust the IFE contrast to improve the viewing experience.
surely access to the window/ shade is one of the reasons for choosing the window seat....
I'm usually affected by a window across the aisle, not by my own, so choosing a window seat doesn't help.
One window open ruins the sleep experience for everyone in the cabin.

Of course, I am speaking from my POV as I like it dark for sleeping and I find it overall more relaxing than the "stark, harsh fluorescent lighting" as Capebretonboy called it (which I agree). I find the eye covers annoying... much like you find the overhead lights not adequate.
While not quite as bad as a window during the day, I was recently on a red-eye in J (something like SFO-YYZ) where another couple had their damn reading lights on the whole time. Very annoying.
Now, if they offered masks on every flight, my opinion might be different. But if they're not going to offer masks to every passenger on the aircraft, then I have no problem with them demanding lights off, windows closed, for obvious night times. On a red-eye to the east, where you get on the plane at night and get off in the morning, I think almost everyone is going to want to sleep.
