His GPS story doesn't stand up. Of the available routes between Kentucky and Vermont the closest he would come to the Thousand Island Bridge is through Watertown, NY, about 30 miles away. That's quite the GPS error.
The more likely route between the two states would have taken him no more than 90 miles from that crossing.
I've driven that road into Canada. It's hard to see how he could miss the various signs, the border crossing on the U.S. side, the Duty Free store and the various turnarounds that he could have taken.
The military have a saying that the most dangerous thing in the world is a 2nd lieutenant with a map and a compass. Second place must fall to a retired sergeant with a GPS who can't read road signs.
