Not sure what a double-endorsed check is, and I lived in the US for a
long time... Every time I had to deposit a check written out to someone else I've just had the payee endorse the back and made the deposit as normal. I did not have to sign it myself, and have never had a problem with a bank accepting such deposit over the years.

This would be my advice as well. The check should indicate what bank issued it, and if you go into one of their branches they should cash. Here's to hoping AA use a national bank and not Union West Dallas Federal Bank or some other such obscurity.
For what it's worth, I have a Citigold account in the UK and have current accounts in US Dollars, Sterling and Euros, with cheque books in each currency and no fees to deposit cheques issued in each currency at my local Citi branch. I'm not sure how the Citigold account works in Hong Kong, but it may be worth checking into as the benefits are quite good (no foreign currency fees when transferring between my accounts, no ATM withdrawal fees when using one of my accounts' currencies, etc.).
