In the commercial aviation context, I can live with CPU (complimentary premier upgrade) even though another CPU initialism (central processing unit) is far more commonly used outside of aviation. But using VFR to refer not only to "visual flight rules" but also to "visiting friends & relatives" is silly, given that the former initialism has been in widespread use since the early years of commercial aviation. VFF (visiting friends and family) would be far more appropriate, IMHO.
