Lounges create loyalty and high priced business seat sales, so they are more of a loss leader to get you to buy a ticket on that airline.

I'm referring to the cost of day passes for lounges, which has nothing to do with buying business class ticket sales. In fact, many lounges that sell day passes are not connected to airlines at all, and thus have the same profit motives in selling day passes as a health club.
As for profit per square-foot, for airline-run lounges, you are neglecting that the lounges also sell overpriced drinks and food. But my point had nothing to do with profit, just that it would be unreasonable to expect a gym at an airport to cost under $15.
