And no, Sydney probably won't work. I've never even considered using miles to get back there, but it's much easier to use them to get to Asia, stay a few days, then onwards....might work.
I hope that plan works out (and a nod to Raffles' Headforpoints blog which highlights this as an option).
And never give up on finding seats to SYD with Avios - I used my Amex voucher to book two First seats to Sydney after spotting some availability about 9 months out. You just need flexibility towards dates and duration of stopovers.
