Having said that, you COULD NOT on the same day go to another hotel,in the same city and check in. As you cannot physically sleep in two hotels in one night. The only exception I can think of is a time zone change situation.

Sure you can. Two situations which happened to me
The first was I booked three nights. I only needed 2 nights, but I needed the room until past check out, even past the late check out. Then I had an hour flight north and stayed in another Starwood hotel for the remainder of the night.
Another situation: I booked a room for 12 nights in Rome. On the 6th day, I got bored with Rome, so I took a train to Florence for 2 days then Venice for 2 days then returned to Rome for the remainder of the 12 night stay. ( I told the front desk what I was doing)
I suspect that actually falling asleep is not required
