I would second one suggestion: Drop your car in LAX and fly to PHX. You will be happier with an extra night in LA or Scottsdale, in my opinion.
Are you going to host a get together in SF? LH forum drinks meeting? Maybe you can make it to Cavallo point for their great mixology and wonderful appetizers. The Discovery Museum is right there too, which could be fun. Definitely don't miss the Exploratorium in SF!
Thanks. It is good to hear that not everyone thinks it looks that bad. My husband will do the driving, and he does not mind. We all think it is more stressful if we will need to really pack everything together and take a plane than driving. This will feel like we lose a whole day (packing, giving back rental car, check in, fly, arrive, get new rental car etc. - for us more relaxing to drive). Also SanDiego1K mentioned nice scenery, and we do not want to miss that.
Regarding a get together with the FT LH group in SF, I would need to see what family think... But maybe.
